Classes at Old Town School are taught with the folk tradition in mind in a community-based social setting with over 200 of the most talented teaching artists in the country. Whether you’re a beginner or the best on the block there’s a place – and a class – for you here. We believe music and dance should be fun! Come to learn and meet new people in the process.
Throughout our catalog you will find both Skills or Core classes and Repertoire (Rep) Classes. Skills classes teach you the basic techniques necessary to advance through the program. Repertoire classes reinforce skills and focus on playing more songs using learned techniques.
You’re entering a special musical community when you sign up for a class. Join in open jams, our Second Half gatherings after class, visiting artist residencies and other community events all around Chicago.
Whether you’re a complete beginner or an experienced musician, private lessons provide opportunities to get personal attention. We offer 30, 45 and 60-minute varieties at both campuses and you can start any time.
A terrific way to study something new. Low-commitment and hands-on workshops from our faculty as well as visiting and touring artists. We offer workshops in dance, music, songwriting and so much more!

Housed in the basement of our Lincoln Avenue campus, the Resource Center holds a collection of over 25,000 commercial and archival recordings, videos, books, photos, documents and periodicals.

We provide financial aid to both children and adults for private lessons and group classes based on financial need.
You don’t have to own an instrument to join our classes. You are able to apply a percentage of your rental fee toward a purchase of a new instrument too!
