Come sing along to old Yiddish songs! Yiddish is a minority language that currently has ~600,000 native speakers, but at the turn of the 20th century it was the lingua franca of over 11 million Ashkenazi (European) Jews. Over the hundreds of years that it was widely spoken (and continuing today), Yiddish-speaking writers generated a deep archive of literature, theater, music, political thought, and other writing. For each song, we'll learn how to pronounce the words, what they mean, and some relevant history and culture—and then sing them together! No previous musical or Yiddish experience required.
