Finding Your Voice: Breath Control

Finding Your Voice is a series of workshops exploring different aspects of
healthy singing such as intonation, registration, range, posture, placement,
agility, breath control, stamina, tone, etc. These workshops are designed for singers of all levels wanting to brush up on their technique or explore certain topics in more detail. We will also work to address a variety of relevant vocal issues and challenges.

There is a myth that great singers appear as if by magic. Singing is often thought of as something that you are either good at or not, rather than as something that you can get good at, through study and practice. Nobody would ever hand someone an instrument they’ve never really played before ask them to play it like a virtuoso. And yet, this is somehow the way many think about voice. While there are certainly some prodigies out there, most singers work hard to get good. Like any other instrument, learning to sing takes time and practice, and anyone can develop and improve their voice!

Rebecca Toon studied Vocal Performance at the University of Illinois, Speech-Language Pathology at Northwestern University, and Counseling at Northeastern Illinois University. She specializes in experiential and somatic (body-oriented) approaches to singing. She’s been teaching voice to all levels of singers for over twenty years. She leads the Community Choir at the Old Town School of Folk Music, now in its tenth year.
