Songwriting for Moms (Structure): A Workshop with Anna Vogelzang

Were you once a person who jotted down lyrics in a notebook, strummed a guitar in your dorm room or local venue, or even recorded albums - but life suddenly became “too busy” once you became a parent? Part coven, part songwriting workshop, part support group for caregivers, this is a workshop for those who are getting reacquainted with their creative practice and want feedback on crafting songs.

The theme of this workshop will be Structure - how to take ideas, poems, or free writes and shape them into songs. We will go over traditional song form, the lyrical and harmonic goal for song sections, and tips for generating work into a finished product. We will also touch on creative practices and accountability structures. You will leave with tools and a plan to keep your creative practice going - for those who often prioritize others, this is a workshop to help prioritize creative flow.

As a professional musician and a mother of 2 small kids, Anna will share from her own life experience of being a working songwriter and a working parent. All participants will have time to work on the start of a song during 2 separate speedwriting sessions; please bring an instrument. Students will leave with an accountability partner (if desired) and a month’s worth of emailed prompts from Anna after the session, as well as a handout of songwriting prompts.

All nonbinary & female-identifying caregivers (of any generation - parents, children, nurses, teachers, grandparents etc.) are welcome. Basic songwriting knowledge is encouraged.
