Songwriting Workshop with Kacie Swierk

In this workshop, we’ll focus on the role of words in songwriting. We’ll first set a foundation by exploring the differences and similarities between poetry and lyric, and then dig into the idea of songwriting as a continuum between the two. How do different songwriters use words to aid the narrative of a song? Exploring writers like Leonard Cohen, Kasey Musgraves, Jimi Hendrix, and Paul McCartney, we’ll create a graph (of sorts) that allows us to visualize the range of possibilities of how songwriting can be approached. What songwriters are more like poets? More like musicians? Somewhere in between?

The goal in presenting and visualizing this subjective continuum is to provide a framework to see your own work. Before the session’s end, you’ll be asked to place yourself amongst the songwriters we’ve charted. Where on the continuum do you tend to lean? And, wherever that is, is it allowing the proper space for the songs you want to be writing? In short, we’ll seek to create a visual and a conversation that challenges, affirms, and hopefully inspires curiosity and playfulness in your approach to songwriting.

*This workshop will not include time to share your own songs, however, please bring a notebook and a pencil for notes and exercises throughout!

*Open to writers, musicians, and music lovers of all experience levels.
