Music Theory for Songwriting

Adult Group Class / Songwriting Program

Studying music theory can give songwriters more tools to express themselves, and it doesn’t have to be complicated! In this class, we’ll discuss the music theory concepts behind using different types of chords, melodies, rhythms and arrangement techniques. Students will analyze classic songs in class to see how master songwriters apply these concepts. Over the week, students will work on assignments to apply them to their own songs! We’ll workshop songs in class so you can get feedback from Charles and your classmates. For pianists, we will have a piano in the classroom; other students should bring their acoustic guitars, ukuleles, etc.  Don’t worry if you don’t know how to read music yet; we'll show students the basics! No music theory experience necessary.
