Chord Melody Arranging for Solo Guitar with Stan Ayeroff

For this workshop Stan will show his process of creating a chord melody arrangement for solo guitar of several standards. Songs included will be “The Nearness of You”, “Autumn Leaves” and “Manha de Carnaval”. He will concentrate on what makes a great full sounding arrangement and how to get the best sound out of the guitar through interesting chord choices and inversions and unusual fingerings. According to Stan “I love the challenge and art of playing solo guitar and look forward to sharing what I’ve learned after performing thousands of gigs.”

While studying composition at the California Institute of the Arts, Stan fell in love with swing music, especially Django Reinhardt and the Hot Club of France. He went on to write books on Django, Charlie Christian and Benny Goodman. He has performed with Texas R&B singer Delbert McClinton and was co-musical director (with Danny Elfman) of the original “Mystic Knights of the Oingo Boingo”. Stan served as Orchestral Supervisor for Rod Stewart, Page and Plant and The Who. He conducted a chamber orchestra for Heart’s concert video “The Road Home” on Capitol Records. He has been the musical director for a series of projects featuring Roger Daltrey of The Who, and has worked as arranger for songwriter David Baerwald (David+David, Sheryl Crow).

Stan was the leader of the band “Dream Street”, a contemporary jazz chamber group featuring violinist Sid Page and vocalist Bobbi Page. He was also the leader of “The Snapdaddys”, a modern swing group. Stan wrote 6 books on solo guitar for Warner Bros. Publications including “Play It Again, Stan”, “Best In Contemporary Standards”, “Cavatina & 20 Movie Themes” and “The Best of Gershwin”.

He is currently working on a new book “Chord Melody Arranging for Solo Guitar” for Mel Bay Publications.
