Master Brazilian percussionist Ailton Nunes, bateria director of the legendary Mangueira Samba School in Rio De Janeiro, and leader of the Advanced Bateria at California Brazil Camp, makes a rare Chicago appearance to lead an intensive three-week percussion camp featuring each of the main instruments used in Brazilian Samba Schools or Baterias. The basic patterns for instruments such as tamborims, caixas, surdos and repiniques, agogos, will be demonstrated. Ailton will explain the role of each drum section in a Samba School and teach the rhythms that together will form the basis of a parade performance in the evening of July 12 as part of the Square Roots Festival.
Participants will choose or be assigned an instrument (which students must provide - available for purchase at the Old Town School Store) and may attend as many workshops as possible during the boot camp period, but there are set days for each instrument section rehearsal, and three mandatory meeting days.
THE FIRST NIGHT IS FOR ALL PARTICIPANTS AND WILL BE HELD ON MONDAY, JUNE 23rd at 7pm. Other meeting days, times and locations are available to registered participants and subject to change.
