Teachers at the Old Town School

Thomas Winthrop Stevens

Piano

Styles - Eclectic

Mr. Stevens teaches classical, jazz, standards, ragtime, reading and interpreting lead sheets, how to read pop sheet music, improvisation, blues forms and licks, music theory and composition from beginning to advanced.

Tom's lifelong acquisition of musical knowledge and skill is a resource at the student's disposal. While he welcomes all students, he has a special fondness for teaching three particular types of students. With children who are just beginning, Tom strives to instill the sense that music is not an onerous obligation, but a vast world of discovery, and to teach the joy and satisfaction of developing skill and mastery. He loves teaching older adults who finally have time to pursue learning piano or returning to it after a hiatus. Tom is expert at helping students who are entering college as music majors to prepare for their entrance exams and to succeed in the program.

He received his Bachelor of Music from the Chicago College of Performing Arts of Roosevelt University and his Master of Music from DePaul University graduating Pi Kappa Lambda. Studied piano pedagogy at Northwestern University.

Tom Is an experienced Composer and Performing Pianist. He is Co-Producer of the Chicago Sounding Series, a recipient of a CAPP award for emerging artists and of the Old Town School Commissioning Award. He has released three CDs on the Wynieu Music label which have received airplay on radio stations throughout the US and the Netherlands.
