Spotlight: Dominican Republic
A fusion of rhythmic bolero with other Afro-Antillean genres like son, cha-cha-cha, and merengue, Bachata is a genre of music and dance that originated in the Dominican Republic in the 1960s. The Bachata Academy is the only music program in the world that focuses on teaching bachata. The Academy's Grammy-nominated professors Martires de Leon and Abel Martinez endeavor to transmit their knowledge of bachata to future generations, while encouraging children to develop their own musical expression.
