Help us celebrate Erwin Helfer's 86th birthday and the release of his new book Blues Piano and How to Play It. Erwin is a boogie woogie, blues, and jazz piano innovator and master. He has been carrying on the Chicago piano tradition as the last living link to the Yancey family who pioneered this style of music. Building on decades of historically significant achievements, Erwin continues to play, record, teach, and write, adding to his already prolific legacy. Erwin's new book captures his teaching methods which he honed from over fifty years of teaching both beginner and advanced piano students.
This year, in a NPR review of Erwin's last release, Kevin Whitehead said “There aren't many left who do what Helfer does with such unshowy authority… Erwin Helfer doesn't carry his knowledge like a burden. He has some fun with it, as on a jam session with some bluesy buddies heard on his album "Celebrate The Journey." Erwin will perform with his long-time collaborators John Brumbach, Katherine Davis, Davide Ilardi, and Skinny Williams. Gospel music legends, Elsa Harris and Pastor Donald Gay, will also perform and be part of The Sirens Records celebration for Erwin.
