Get ready to dance right back to the turn of the 20th century, as Jimmy Träskelin and Tallari tune up for a ”Finn Hall” experience!
The Finnish folk music group is touring the USA with a special program called Lähtölaulu - A Song of Departure. This project has the three musicians - featuring singer and harmonica player Jimmy Träskelin and Tallari members Katri Haukilahti and Sampo Korva - diving into the unique song material of the golden age of Finnish-American immigration. Around 280 000 people immigrated from Finland to North America between the years 1881 and 1914 in search of a better life. This inspired hundreds of songs which depict the phenomenon of immigration, as well as created a special subgenre of Finnish folk music, with musicians mixing the tradition of the old country with what the learned in the new one.
A special event which occurred amongst the Finnish-Americans was the ”Finn Hall” dances, in which the Finns would gather to dance to the memorable folk tunes of the old homeland. You don't need to be a Finn to dance the polka - but it sure helps to have some ”sisu” in you
