The Old Town School of Folk Music, in partnership with the Cenzontles organization and the Consulate General of Mexico in Chicago, present the first annual Mexican Indigenous Music Festival. Join us to share in the cultural heritage of Mexico's diverse indigenous communities through music, dance, cuisine, clothing and handicrafts. Several indigenous groups representing distinct ethnic groups in Mexico will perform including Los Pireris from the state of Michoacán and the local Juchari Sïrankua both representing the Purépecha community. This event kicks off the festival that will be held throughout the metro area in a variety of venues through the 15th of September.

This event is being produced in collaboration with the Instituto Mexicano de Culture and Educación (ICME), Mexican Board of Tourism, the Comité Cultural Mexicano, and the local “Federaciones” for the states of Michoacán, Chihuahua, Guanajuato, Guerrero, and Aguascalientes.

Semillas is a local organization that supports indigenous women in Mexico. They will be selling hand woven items from the women's cooperatives in Chiapas at tonight's event.
