Kids Song Of The Session

Kids Song of the Session

About Old Town School of Folk Music's Song of the Session

Join us in embracing Old Town School's Song of the Session, a unique and cherished aspect of our group music classes. This tradition not only connects our community but also celebrates cultural diversity through the universal language of music.

During each class session, we carefully select a song to be played and explored across all our kids' classes, family jams, and more. The Song of the Session transcends instruments, voices, ages, and musical styles, creating a harmonious blend of diverse expressions that resonate through the entire school. Let's all learn, share, and play together!

Kids Songs of the Session 1 - "Here Comes a Bluebird"

Students stand in a circle holding raised hands. One student stands outside the circle. As students sing, the student flies in and out of the circle (under the raised hands of the students). On "take a little partner," they choose a partner, and both students go in the middle of the circle and hop in place. The song begins again with both "birds" flying in and out until "Take a little partner," at which time both "birds" choose new "birds," who hop in the center of the circle.

Here Comes a Bluebird - lyrics

Here comes a bluebird in through my window
Hey diddle dum a day day day
Take a little partner, hop in the garden
Hey diddle dum a day day day

Kids Songs of the Session 2 - "I Don't Need Sunny Skies to Sing About You" - Dan Zanes and Andrew Bird

Another fun song we're playing in our kids classes this session! Fun fiddle parts in the song make it applicable to even more students.

"I Don't Need Sunny Skies to Sing About You" by Dan Zanes and Andrew Bird - lyrics

Hey there, duchess, don't you know
A little rain is gonna come and go
But I don't need sunny skies to sing about you

I'm like the birds up in the trees
With an endless store of melodies
And I don't need sunny skies to sing about you

I'd sing about your laughing eyes
The way they fill the room
The way you're lighting the sky upon this rainy afternoon

Aw, thanks for the flowers
Thanks for the smile
I'm gonna sit and play my guitar for a while
I don't need sunny skies to sing about you

I'd sing about your dancing feet
The way you jump and spin
The way you open the door and let this world waltz right on in
Hey there duchess, don't you know,
Here's a tune to say I love you so
And I don't need sunny skies to sing about you
