Discover the dazzling music of Rajab Suleiman and Kithara from Zanzibar. The group will present a participatory workshop on the genre of taarab and maqam music theory from the East African coast. A diverse array of instruments such as oud (fretless lute), qanoun (lap harp), accordion, violin, and percussion are often found in taarab. The unique style of music from this East African region is influenced by musical traditions from the Middle East, North Africa, and India. Students will learn to play scales and rhythms associated with taarab to better understand and appreciate the music of Zanzibar and its neighbors. Players of strings, percussion, guitars, accordions, Middle Eastern and African instruments will especially enjoy the workshop.
