Teachers at the Old Town School

Rita Ruby

Rita has always been a singer  and she started teaching professionally when she began working at the Old Town School of Folk Music in 2000.  She started playing piano at age 5, whenever she could get near one (!) and took up guitar about 20 years ago. Rita performs with Whiskey Hollow, a Chicago based bluegrass band and has performed at the University of Chicago Folk Festival. She has also taught at midwest music festivals and internationally.

Rita's musical knowledge of country and southern gospel songs and her talent for finding harmonies are born of pure passion for what she sings.

In addition to group classes here at Old Town School of Folk Music, Rita teaches private lessons.  A singer since childhood, Rita learned by hearing others sing and approaches much of what she does with a focus toward listening.  If you are interested in singing the genre and styles that are Rita's specialties she will immerse you in the repertoire and the technique of bluegrass, vintage country, southern gospel and roots style singing.  Lessons with Rita are a great fit for those who already sing and are interested in these genres.  She helps singers identify and resolve obstacles to singing. Rita will help you bring courage to your voice and approach harmony singing with creativity and confidence.
