Along with his ensemble, Wanees Zarour brings the buzuq, a long-necked stringed instrument to the forefront in this concert, exploring its complex, energetic and rhythmic sound and technique in original and traditional music.

Wanees Zarour is an award winning Palestinian-American composer, buzuq virtuoso and multi-instrumentalist whose works transcend borders and challenge the parameters of the traditions that he specializes in. Deeply rooted in both worlds of Middle Eastern/North African and Jazz, Zarour stands at the intersection of these worlds, weaving an intricate dance between harmony and the microtonal modal system (maqam). Wanees Zarour's newest album is expected in early 2023 with his project "East Loop". He is also the director of the University of Chicago Middle East Music Ensemble and the co-director of the Chicago Immigrant Orchestra.
