Enslaved people brought the ancestor of the modern banjo to American. Few people know that the banjo’s life in the America’s began in the Caribbean. It then proceeded to influence all popular US music as we know it. In honor of its roots, this class will connect the banjo with music from Jamaica and the US. Jimmy Cliff, Bob Marley, Big Bill Broonzy, Missississippi John Hurt are all players who pushed the backbeat over the downbeat in their music. Clawhammer banjo is the silver platter on which it can be delivered and celebrated.
