Freddie Green, of the Count Basie Orchestra, was arguably the most influential 20th century swing rhythm guitarist. His style became so famous that big band charts are often marked "play in the style of Freddie Green. This masterclass will let students hear Freddie on different recordings and understand his sonic contribution to the Count Basie sound. General aspects of big band rhythm guitar will be explained. Details of Freddie's unique technique will be illustrated using etudes, transcriptions, and live demonstrations.
Students should have a working knowledge of the guitar fingerboard and chord theory, as well as an interest and appreciation for swing music from the 1930s through the 1950s.
