Great Gals of Traditional Music

Get to know these pivotal women in traditional music: Ola Belle Reed, a folk singer and songwriter who often focused on Appalachian life and traditions; Chicago’s own Ella Jenkins, who celebrates and incorporates the cultures and traditions she’s encountered; and the duo of Hazel Dickens & Alice Gerrard, who were bluegrass bandleaders at a time when most bluegrass bands were led by men. Explore the music and history of these greats. Work on creating arrangements of their music, focusing on rhythm, melodies and harmonies using instruments and voices. Work by ear with handouts to take home.
