Blues Guitar Styles: Robert Johnson

Learn some of blues guitar’s founding styles from Paul Kaye, original guitar player of Devil-in-a-Woodpile, and begin to play your blues like a master. The music of Robert Johnson is recognized as the pinnacle of Delta blues style and technique. Yet the driving shuffles,“2-beat grooves” and emotional bottleneck/slide guitar that define his sound can be heard at the root of the later urban blues, and would eventually redefine the course of popular music throughout the world. Having an understanding of Robert Johnson's music is, simply put, a prerequisite for any aspiring blues musician!

In this workshop, Paul Kaye will delve into Johnson's songs and music, revealing the details, tricks and shortcuts at the root of his intricate guitar style. Including: blues fingerpicking; shuffles and other “delta rhythms”; bottleneck/slide technique; open tunings and the blues guitar chord voicings favored by Robert Johnson and other Delta blues artists. Some written material provided.

Don't miss this opportunity to sit down with one of Chicago's most enduring and highly regarded acoustic blues artists to learn the tricks of the trade. Paul spent years playing with and learning from Honeyboy Edwards who himself was musical partner of Robert Johnson!
