Hot Times at Old Town

Appearing below are selections from the hard copy Hot Times. The objective is to highlight activities at the School and in the larger community, especially those featuring or of special interest to teachers and staff. Your suggestions are welcome. You missed the U. of C. Folk Festival?

It was February 8-10. Think about attending next year. See “more” below for what you missed.

This is one of Chicago’s outstanding annual festivals, now in its 48th year. The festival is widely respected for finding excellent traditional music AND for its free afternoon mini-concerts (“workshops”) by the performers. These are held at Ida Noyes Hall, 1212 E. 59th Street (an easy shot south on Lake Shore Drive, exit at the Museum of Science and Industry for the Midway, which borders 59th St.) The afternoon activities always include multiple jams, usually old-timey and bluegrass, dances (squares/contras, cajun, and ethnic), and vendors. Concerts at Mandel Hall concerts this year include Paul Brown (banjo), Chicago Klezmer Ensemble, Chulrua (Irish), Geraldine and Pastor Donald Gay (gospel), Lafayette Rhythm Devils (Cajun), Aaron Moore (barrelhouse piano), New Bad Habits (string band), Junior Sisk and Rambler’s Choice (bluegrass), and Kim Wilson (blues harmonica). The full weekend package is $45-55, with individual concerts between $15 and $25 (and a bargain!)
