November 28, 2011 – Fiddle 2 Rep

Hi!

I’m finally doing some catch up!

Kerry shared this video and said this teacher has a really good way of explaining fiddle chords. Thanks Kerry!

We worked on Paradise by John Prine this morning (it’s one of the Songs of the Session). Here’s a video my friend Jason shared… it has some pictures that give the tune some neat context. You can practice along with the video, it’s in the key of D. I bought John Prine singing it on iTunes this morning.

Other tunes we’ve worked on:

MONDAY

-Inchapikua (G) we’ll learn the harmony next week
-Wildwood Flower (C)
-Black Eyed Susie (D)
-Dancing Bear (Em)

THURSDAY

-Molly Put the Kettle (check out Steve Rosen playing this tune on the tune archive)
-Rochester Schottische, http://www.oldtownschool.org/fiddle/fun/rochesterschottische8488.mp3

Catherine brought in Rochester Schottische a couple of weeks ago. The recording is a version of me playing it from a chart in Steve’s class. Pretty neat tune!

Let me know if you have any questions. Hope to see you at Open House Friday, December 2nd!

Hi!

I’m so behind on this blog right now. I’ll be catching up tomorrow, but I thought in the meantime, some of you might like to learn Silent Night…

I recorded it for some of my private lesson students and thought that you might like it, too!

See you soon!

And here you’ll find another version (slow and fast), played by Lynn Frederick for the Fiddle Club of the World.

A tune from George Coe’s Album of Music for the Violin, 1876. It’s not really a jig, except that it’s for a minstrel stage dance.

Pull Back Jig slower, then faster on banjo & fiddle

Hi!

This week we worked on Black Eyed Suzy, which can be found in the Kids’ Section of the Tune Archive here:

http://www.oldtownschool.org/fiddle/fun/kids.html

We also started a tune called Inchapikua, here is a link:

http://www.oldtownschool.org/fiddle/fun/inchapikua%28lasmariposas%298536.mp3

Inchapikua is part of a group of tunes that are used to represent the fishermen who cast their butterfly nets early in the morning. The tune comes from the state of Michoacán and is a pirecua. A pirecua is a tune that is syncopated.

Happy fiddlin’!

October 31st, 2011 – Fiddle 2 Rep

Hi!

We did so much yesterday!

We reviewed the tunes from last week and worked on the chords for Polla Pinta, Dancing Bear (in Em) and Angeline the Baker.

We also talked about the pentatonic scale, check out this awesome video with Bobby McFerrin:

We also learned about how to make a chord (1, 3, 5) and chord progressions (1, 4,5 )

So much math!

Last Thursday, Jonas said you worked a lot on Black Eyed Susie, I can’t wait to play it with you!

E-mail me if you have any questions!

Maria :)
