Hi!

It was good to see everyone last week, you all sounded great on Paddy on the Handcar, Paul is going to teach some more bowing next week.

We worked on the A MINOR pentatonic which is: A, C D E G A (we used it in Cross Road Blues)

The A MAJOR pentatonic is: A B C# D E F# A

Hi!

Here’s my first post of the session!

We’ve worked on Red-Haired Boy. We’ve been using Paul Tyler’s version which you can find on the Tune Archive.

Also, I Still Miss Someone which we’re playing in the Key of C. Here is the C Scale and Pentatonic Scale.

Paul taught Paddy on the Handcar on Monday, here is the abc notation

There’s been requests for Tater Patch, In Spite of Ourselves and Indian Corn, and Roscoe. We’re work on one of those on Monday.

Another piece that can be played in cross-tuned A (AEAE). Slow and medium versions can be found in the Tune Archive or on this Flog post. On these recordings, the fiddle is in standard tuning. Cross-tuning opens up more drones and lets you play the tune on the lower strings with same fingering.

We tried cross-tuning. In this case, the most common variety: AEAE. (Raise your 4th and 3rd strings up a whole step, so they are an octave match for the 2nd and 1st strings.)

These two tunes are fun. The Brude Polkka (Wedding polka) is from Arto’s Old Town School residency in 2009.

Class will not meet for Week 3. Proceed to the concert hall promptly at 7 pm and enjoy the 9th Midwest Fiddle Championship. Cheer on your favorites.
