Old-Time Ensemble (Wed) – week 3

A tune from the great Lee Stoneking of Clinton, Missouri. At least he was the source. Geoff Seitz, an equally great fiddler from St. Louis is heard on this recording. (Geoff will be at the Old Town School to play a square dance in the fall.)

Hell Against the Barn Door by the Ill-Mo Boys, 1992

And a song . . .

Did You Ever See the Devil, Uncle Joe? by Fiddling Powers & Family, 1927

Fiddle 3 – more week 1

I almost forgot. On Thursday night, we started in on a second tune toward the end of class. We’ll do more with it this week. And I will introduce to the Sunday class this week as well. It’s the melody of an old song recorded by the Pickard Family back in the late 1920s (near the time they were on the radio in Chicago): Bye-Bye My Honey, I’m Gone.

Bye-Bye My Honey, I’m Gone Lotus Dickey of Paoli, Indiana

slow banjo & fiddle duet

kinda fast, sorta

Fiddle 4Ever (Tue) – week 1

The tune we worked on became the subject of some rumination and cogitation. It ended up as the Tune of the Week on the Fiddle Club of the World Blog. Several recordings and notation can be found there. Follow this link.

[Little] Billy Wilson, Geoff Seitz with the Ill-Mo Boys, 1991

Geoff is fine fiddler from St. Louis, who is scheduled to play a square dance in the Friday night Global Dance Series next Fall. Don’t miss it.

And here’s another bit of Show Me, a tune introduced at the end of class . . .

Missouri Mud Bob Holt of Ava, Missouri

Fiddle 3 (Thu & Sun) – week 1

A song that became a dance tune. (Or, who knows, maybe it’s a dance tune that became a song.) In the key of A, but using the notes of the D scale.

Here it is on banjo . . .

Oh, My Little Darling Thadeus Willingham of Gulfport, Mississippi, 1939

and as a string band piece . . .

Oh, My Little Darling Volo Bogtrotters, circa 1986

Old-Time Ensemble (Wed) – week 6

Lasts night’s tune is also the Tune of the Week for last week on the Fiddle Club of the World blog. The earliest recording of the tune, plus photos and tributes can be found there.

Piney Woods Gal played by Frank Hall, 2007

And here’s the source of the singing version of Angeline the Baker that we did. Obviously, the melody recomposed itself in my head over the years. The singing part is close to what we did. The instrumental part is, shall we say, a variation.

Angeline the Baker Uncle Eck Dunford & E.V. Stoneman, circa 1927

Fiddle 2Rep (Thu) – week 5

My version of a classic tune in A. Be prepared to end the A part like the B part when playing with others. But I like this way more better.

Cripple Creek at medium tempo

Cripple Creek slowly

Old-Time Ensemble (Wed) – week 5

Jack Wilson

The slow recording below should help everybody. It is of special interest to the fiddlers, because it is played in ADAD tuning. The tune also works well in standard tuning or high bass (G string up to A).

Jack Wilson in cross-tuning played slowly

Fiddle 4Ever (Tue) – weeks 4 & 5

We eased our way into cross-tuning.

Here’s a G tune you can play in standard tuning, or tune your e string down to d for a drone.

Old Baldy Kicking Up played by Steve Rosen

Here’s a waltz in D we played in ADAD (A,DAd) tuning

Midnight on the Water played by Colby Maddox (a bit different)

And a classic D tune also in ADAD (A,DAd) tuning. But for this one and the previous one, we also ran our G string down to a low, low D (D,DAd)

Bonaparte’s Retreat by Kentucky fiddler William H. Stepp

Where’s the beef?
