Old-Time Ensemble (Wed) – Week 7In preparing for Pete Sutherland’s appearance at the Fiddle Club of the World this Friday (Oct. 16) we learned one of Pete’s tunes for the jam session. You may have been told by one of your teachers that Streak o’ Lean comes from Gid Tanner & the Skillet Lickers. That is not true. The tune was fiddled by Ahaz A. Gray, a member of the Atlanta based band 7 Foot Dilly & his Dill Pickles, circa 1928. Streak o’ Lean, Streak o’ Fat [link to iTunes store] Though they were also in Atlanta at the same time, the Skillet Lickers never recorded “Streak o’ Lean.” CORRECTION: The Skillet Lickers did record “Streak o’ Lean, Streak o’ Fat.” That’s the version we learned. The tune linked above from John Dilleshaw’s band (with A.A. Gray) is not the same tune. The Skillet Lickers’ “Streak o’ Lean” can be heard at the end of the following skit. Possum Hunt on Stump House Mountain, part 2 In the interests of completeness, here’s part one of the skit . . . Quality Assurance still at work on your Flog.
