Our tune of the week is a waltz Arto Järvelä contributed to the Fiddle Club of the World.

Fiddle 4 (Mon) – Week 4

Our last class with Arto was all Finnish tunes. Here’s a new one a mazurka

Masurkka from Eräjärvi

The mazurka is yet another distinctive dance in triple meter, along with the polska, polonaise and minuet. Unlike the Nordic cultures, Americans have only continued one traditional dance in triple meter, the waltz.

http://www.oldtownschool.org/fiddle/fun/rockymountain3062.mp3

Rocky mountain, Rocky mountain
Rocky mountain High!
When you’re on that Rocky mountain
Hang your head and cry

CHORUS Doo, doo, doo, doo, do remember me (2x)

Sunny valley, sunny valley
sunny valley low
When you’re in that sunny valley
Sing it soft and slow

CHORUS

Stormy ocean, stormy ocean
Stormy ocean wide
When you’re in that stormy ocean
There’s no place to hide

Have fun!

Don’t miss hearing Arto play. It is sublime.

Check out this tune he made up while sitting on our couch. [Link now works.]

Old-Time Ensemble (Wed) – Week 3

Arto Järvelä taught us a tune from Finnish musician Artturi Peltokangas, who had been to America in the middle of the century. He lived for a while in northern Minnesota, but also visited Chicago. Besides playing fiddle, Mr. Peltokangas also played banjo and harmonica. He took some American tunes back home with him when he returned to Finland, including this one . . .

Henry Fordin sotiisi (in G)

played by Arto and Steve

A sotiisi is a couple dance we call schottische (step-step-step-hop, step-step-step-hop, step-hop-step-hop-step-hop-step-hop). And yes. It’s that Henry Ford.

Fiddle 3 (Mon) – Week 3

We did a lot this week.

Here’s the chordal harmony Arto Järvelä played for “Green Fields of America”
second voicing

We can use some of the same double stops to second for the new tune we learned.

Indian Corn *

Demonstated by Paul . . .
slow

medium

At the end Arto demonstated two new Finnish tunes, both from Arttu Peltokangas, who had been to America in the middle of the century, and took some American tunes back home.

Henry Fordin sotiisi (in D)

‘Sotiisi’ = schottische, which is a type of couple dance. And yes. It’s the Henry Ford you’re thinking of.

Arttun polkka

* “Indian Corn” was recorded by Lynn “Chirps” Smith, Stephanie Coleman and Paul Tyler for the CD Folksongs of Illinois #2: Fiddlers, produced by the Illinois Humanities Council. On the CD, the tunes is misidentified as “Ol’ Woodard’s Tune.” Chirps learned it from Garry Harrison, and Garry set us straight on the name.
