Fiddle 3 (Mon) – Week 3

We put “Perrodine Two-Step” off for another week. I’ve moved the links to this post.

Instead, we did the “Cuckoo’s Nest

Here are two old recordings:

Cuckoo’s Nest by Ed Haley of Ashland, Kentucky, 1940s (link to iTunes store)

The Cuckoo’s Nest by Judge Dan White of Indianapolis and John W. Summers, 1963 (link to Smithsonian Global Sound)
Note: Only the whole album, “Fine Times at Our House” can be purchased for download. The album has a half dozen examples of masterful fiddling by John W. Summers of Marion, Indiana.

The way we learned it . . .

slow

medium

xx
Next week’s tune is a Cajun two-step that works well for a square or contra dance, the “Perrodin Two-Step.”

First, an early recording:
Perrodin Two-Step by Angelas LeJeunne, circa 1930

Perrodin 2-Step by Dewey Balfa (link to iTunes store)

Perrodin Two-Step by Al Berard.
(Used with permission from a great CD from Swing Cat Enterprises. It can be purchased here. The label owner has offered us a wholesale price if we order a dozen of these. I think I’m going to do it. Let me know if you’d like one. It’ll cost you about $8 or $9.)

Fiddle 4 Cajun – Week 2

Next week we’ll work on the two-step “Allons a Lafayette.”

Listen to these performances

Allons a Lafayette by Joe Falcon & Cleoma Breaux , 1928

Allons a Lafayette by the Hackberry Ramblers, 1963 (iTunes store)

Allons a Lafayette by Hector Duhon (fiddle ) & Octa Clark (accordion), 1982

Reviewing last week’s tune, here are some medium speed demos of “Jolie Blonde.”

This is in the style of the Hackberry Ramblers.

The second is in the style of Dewey Balfa.

Check back later, when I add a slower recording in the style of Al Berard.

Regarding jam sessions, here’s a note from Stewart Gehring . . .
“The Chicago chapter of the Cajun French Music Association (CFMA) supports these jam sessions. You can get the most current information for the jams (and other Cajun music events) on the Chicago CFMA site http://www.chicagocajuns.org/. Our next jam is scheduled for Sunday afternoon, March 8, 2 – 5 PM, at Ventrella’s Caffe (4947 N. Damen Ave, Chicago). We plan to have the jams the second Sunday of each month at Ventrella’s as long as the owner will let us (he’s been very supportive so far). We’ve had around 14 participating musicians at each jam so far (fiddle, accordian, guitar, etc.), but we can certainly make room for any interested participants, so please let your students know.”

I’m going to try to attend.

And my bands are performing in the next week. The WAZO County Warblers & the Fly Boys will be featured artists at First Friday (Mar 6) at 9:30 in the concert hall. Think country from the 1930s and 40s. The Fantastic Toe Trippers will be playing at One Mic Stand at the Grafton next Tuesday (Mar 10) at 9:30. Traditional dance music from at least three continents.
