Fiddle 2 (Mon) Week 5

Hi Class of ‘09!

Here’s our recording of This Land is Your Land

And here are the lyrics to You Are My Sunshine

(G)You are my sunshine, my only sunshine
You make me (C) happy, when skies are (G)grey.
You’ll never (C) know, dear, how much I (G) love you
Please don’t take my (D) sunshine (G)away

The other night, dear, As I lay sleeping
I dreamed I held you in my arms.
When I awoke,dear, I was mistaken
It was only a pig from the barn

I’ll always love you, and make you happy
If you will only say the same
But if you leave me to love another
You’ll regret it all some day

You told me once, dear, you really loved me
And no one else could come between
But now you’ve left me and love another
You have shattered all my dreams

Louisiana, my Louisiana, the place where I was born
White fields of cotton–green fields of clover
the best fishing and long tall corn

Crawfish gumbo and jambalaya
the biggest shrimp and sugar cane
the finest oysters and sweet strawberries
from toledo bend to new orleans

And listen to Oh Susanna on the tune archive, it’s a good one to know!

Fiddle 2 (Mon) Week 5

Here’s a verse of Cripple Creek that Mary found for us:

Riding in a buggy, that’s for me,
watching the wheels roll merrily

through the mud
and over the stones

bucking horses
break good bones

Listen to You Are My Sunshine this week, and you can try doing the harmony or melody

Fish on a Hook

Hi Folks!

The Fiddle Jam and First Friday are coming up and I wanted you to have some more verses to Fish on a Hook…here they are! The chords are the same in the chorus as they are in the verse.

Chorus
—————————-

(D) Fish on a hook
Fish on a line.
Fish no more till
(A) summer
(D) time.

Verses
———————————

Row my boat to the middle of the stream.
Catch the biggest fish that I’ve ever seen.

See that catfish swimming up stream.
I’m gonna gut that catfish clean.

Catch that catfish by the mouth.
Turn that catfish bone-side out.

You can listen to it here….

Fish On a Hook

See you soon!

Fiddle 4 Cajun – Week 4

This week’s tune is from Dewey Balfa and the Balfa Brothers.

Je Suis Orphelin (link to iTunes store)

You can’t find a better Cajun album to listen to than this one. The CD can still be purchased or downloaded from Swallow Records, a wonderful Cajun and Zydeco music operation in Ville Platte, Louisiana. Just in case you’re interested. (BTW I once met the very friendly owner of Swallow Records, Floyd Soileau. Soileau = Swallow. Get it?)

The Balfa Brothers Play Traditional Cajun Music

Next week we’ll work on a two-step in D.

Two-Step de L’Anse aux Pailles by Les Amis de la Louisianne (link to iTunes store)

I’d never heard of the band, but the preview clip sounds good.

Fiddle 3 (Mon) – Week 4

It’s time to shuffle . . .

ditty bum ditty bum (saw saw slur___ saw saw slur ____)
bum = the downbeat (long note or slur two short ones)
dit = the backbeat (accent it)

Called variously the single shuffle, the country shuffle or the Nashville shuffle.

Dickey’s Discovery-White River Bottoms
by Paul Tyler, Michael Miles & Barbara Silverman, 1988
from an album featuring Old Town School of Folk Music faculty

Demonstration recordings:

White River Bottoms slow

White River Bottoms medium

White River Bottoms full

And here’s a link to a post on the Fiddle Club of the World blog that contains a recording of “White River Bottoms” (and several other tunes) as played by Lotus Dickey of Orange County, Indiana.

Shuffle off.

Fiddle 4 Cajun – Week 3

Catching up and looking ahead.

Here are two demonstrations of Madeleine. It’s in the key of A. We haven’t played it yet, but it uses many of the same licks as Allons a Lafayette.

Madeleine – slow

Madeleine – medium

And one more two-step in the key of A. I hope to get to this one later in the session.

J’Atai au Bal

Next week we’ll start in the key of D. Here are demonstration recordings of a waltz and a two-step we’ll work with over the next couple of weeks. I’ll post source recordings next week.
