The Son Veteranos band began as a small musical therapeutic intervention within the VA Caribbean Healthcare System in Puerto Rico and has quickly grown into a community based program for our local heroes. The group is composed of 24-28 veterans who have found that through music they are able to positively impact their overall health and well-being and contribute to their community. The group has been invited to play in different activities within the hospital and around the island sharing a message of hope and resiliency.
Son Veteranos began as a small salsa group with roughly 5 veterans and in 4 years has grown into a 24-28 veteran band. Participants have found the incredible, transformative power of music. The group is open to veterans enrolled in specific clinics within the hospital and provides a creative outlet and a positive recovery tool for our veterans. At present its musical director is Mr. Wilfredo Sandoz from Carolina and its creative director is Mr. José Alvarado from Comerío. The group is led by Ms. Raquel González-Hodge, Supervisory Recreational Therapist from the VA Caribbean Healthcare System.
