Bluegrass Banjo Survival Skills

Now that you have spent some time working with tablature, it is time to take your banjo skills off the page. This class will help you to develop both your playing ability and your ear by teaching you skills that will enable you to hear chord changes, create solos, improvise, play great rhythm backup, and survive in a jam session.

Students will learn how to utilize various roll patterns in creating breaks with particular focus on the all-important forward roll, which is key in getting that bluegrass sound. Along the way, we will look at examples from Don Reno, Ralph Stanley, J.D. Crowe, and Sonny Osborne.

For backup skills, this class will explore chord vamping, fill rolls, cliché licks, and passing chords while working up and down the neck in various keys and tempos. Learn how to listen to a song and create an arrangement that compliments the music. We’ll concentrate on producing the tone and textures as well as finding the “holes” in a song. Students will also be provided with customized play-along tracks that can be used for practicing the skills covered in class. This is a perfect next step after banjo 4, or for anyone that is looking to expand their banjo horizons.
